Schools reopening: where do you stand?
It's no news that tertiary institutions would be reopened soon and literally everything about life would get back to normal;we're either living and adapting to the reality of the virus coming to stay or a vaccine would be successfully discovered after so much laboratory experiments.
Everyone, both old and young have in one way or the other felt the effect of the pandemic over the past months. Some lost their jobs, some lost their relatives to the cold hands of death, some businesses were crippled, amongst others. There are still some who got better paying jobs this period, some started businesses and are cashing out on a regular basis, some oppurtuned ones graduated from universities, and many others.
In Nigeria, there are private, federal and state universities. Very few private universities like Babcock and Covenant university were able to carry out online classes and exams for their students.
State and federal university students on the other hand were left hopeless throughout this period. Students of federal universities have been with their parents even before the outbreak of the global pandemic due to the ongoing ASUU strike. This is like an annual festival in this part of the world. It now seems normal to everyone as we're usually told by friends to add an extra year when talking about our year of graduation due to ASUU's annual strike action. Well, the outbreak of the global pandemic aborted the possibility of ASUU's demands being met by the federal government. Not even for once has anyone heard any news about the federal government meeting with this organizational body for negotiations on their demands that haven't been able to be met for ages.
Following the news of the reopening of secondary schools and the memo from the National Universities Council,it's like a ray of sunshine for university students in Nigeria. We're quite assured that schools would be reopened soon, but what's our fate with ASUU's unmet demands?
As expected, there are various reactions from university students on social media on the reopening of schools. Say "yayy" if you find your category, lol.
1) The nonchalant students. Well, these ones have either been hopeful at some point and their hopes were dashed and now they don't care anymore or they don't just care as they don't have any hopes in Nigeria anymore. They don't care to know what's on the news about the reopening of schools. Most of these people have already picked up skills and are putting in effort to be successful in them;some already run businesses and know that once schools are reopened, they wouldn't be able to pay attention to their hustle anymore.
2) The nonacademic students. The ones are eager to go back to school, but not for academic reasons. A lot of students fall under this category as most of their close friends reside far away and school is the only bridge that brings them together. They just want to resume and see their friends again, reconnect and fill in for the long time they spent apart.
There are also the ones whose boyfriends/girlfriends are from school. They might stay far apart or close, but based on the fact that they're romantic partners, their only chances of meeting and having lovey-dovey moments is when school resumes. They're so eager to leave home so as to catch up with the loves of their lives.
3) The bookworms. These ones have been reading even from the very first day they left school. They love reading and everything about school excites them. They can't wait to get back to school so they can attend classes, use the library, go for overnight reading, etc. These ones are strictly good students.
4) The ones that just want to graduate. Many of us fall under this category,we're tired of being stagnant;we just want to push till we graduate. Final year students fall under this category because they're literally at the exit door for that degree but everything just stopped.
People in this category just want to move forward with their lives;they can't be classified as bookworms or not. They simply want to make progress!
5) The ones that feel indifferent about the news. There are a few students who have lucrative things that they're always engaged with whenever they're home for holidays;these things may be some vocational training or work that fetches them money. If school resumes now, they would have to leave, thereby abandoning whatever has kept their sanity throughout the lockdown. At the same time, they're tired of being stuck in one place academically. They want to make progress.
6) The ones that just want to leave home in order to maintain their sanity. It's a fact that as a teenager or youth,it's difficult putting up with parents for such a long period of time. Many almost lost it during the period of the lockdown, some fell into depression, some became frustrated. Hearing the news of the reopening of schools is a thing of joy for them because this is their chance to be released from this "cage" and having a breath of fresh air. The smell of freedom is so refreshing.
Whichever category you fall under, it's normal for you're human. If you don't want to return to school, then you might just unconsciously fancy the idea of stagnancy. You need help.
