Zee's Diary: Flip the switch

"Hello handsome. I hope you're good today and work too. Would you be free on Friday or during the weekend? I'd like us to go on a date", I thought for a minute if this was a good enough message to make him notice I had a crush on him. "Nah", I thought and cleared the message.

" Hello Derrick. We've been friends for a while now and I think things have been good between us. I always have this happy feeling whenever I talk to you over text or at the gym. Would you be the Romeo to my Juliet?" I didn't even wait for a second before tapping on the send button. My heart froze for a couple of minutes. I had just sent a "risky" text.

Many people referred to me as the "bossy Zee." I didn't know how this name came about but I didn't care for a bit. Some even said it was the reason I was single, oh well, who cares? This was the "bossy Zee" shooting shots at a cute young man she liked. He was all anyone could ever ask for. He was tall, thick, had full, healthy looking beards, his hair was full and curly and he visited his barber weekly. I don't think I've ever seen him not looking fresh, even when I met him while I jogged every morning in my estate. His fingers were always neat and nails, decently trimmed. He always smelled like a shake of fruits, flowers and a sprinkle of heaven. He was perfect.

I laid down on my bed, anxious about what his reply would be and wondering how I'd handle it if he rejected my proposal. I imagined myself hiding from his view whenever I saw him coming. Finding another gym to enrol with too would be helpful and I'd have to never visit Lapariaz place for lunch anymore. Wow! So much work to do all in a bid to handle his possible rejection. These thoughts weakened me, so I went into the kitchen and got a glass of red wine. I drank it in a gulp and took out a piece of fried chicken lap from the freezer. I put it in a plate and into the microwave. I watched the turkey defrost as it got spinned on the white plate under the orange light in the microwave. It was five minutes already and the microwave stopped with a sound. I snapped out of my unconscious thoughts and took the meat out. I ate it quietly; it was really juicy. I drank a glass of cold water, went into my room and slept off.

I woke up by 9am. It was independence day and a public holiday. I took my phone from the charger, it was fully charged. I switched my data on and opened WhatsApp. My heart was freezing and hot at the same time. Messages rolled into my phone and there it was, Derrick's message. I dropped the phone and went off to bath. I spent an hour in the bathroom. I didn't realize this until I got back to the sitting room and looked at the clock, 10am. I decided to pick up courage and check his message.

"I'm overwhelmed and at the same time glad for this message. I've also had this in mind for a while but wasn't sure about how you feel about me. Since the feeling is mutual, let's have a toast by 8pm at any venue of your choice to day one of endless love, smiles and assurance. I'm glad you're now my queen", he said. Before she could read the text to the end, her cheeks were already pink from blushing. "Good Lord! Thank you."
